Plato Pet Treats

Duck Treats for Dogs – A Quick Guide for Dog Owners

Duck Treats for Dogs

Keeping your pets happy, healthy, and active is one of the most important things you can do as a pet owner.

At Plato Pet Treats, we put ingredients first because your dog’s health comes first.

Understanding the ingredients and benefits of the food your pet is consuming is just one way to do this. Keep reading to learn how duck treats for dogs can help your dog’s brain function, serve as a substitute for chicken or beef for a dog with food sensitivities, and provide an excellent source of B vitamins, iron, omega fatty acids, and selenium.

Using real duck as the number one ingredient in our treats tells you that it is the most prominent ingredient and that there is nothing sneaky going on behind the scenes.

Is Duck Good for Dogs?

Duck is an excellent protein choice for dog treats and foods. Duck is high in protein, B vitamins, iron, omega fatty acids, and selenium. You may be wondering what benefits these compounds offer your pet, so let’s run through them in a little greater detail.

Protein is especially important for your dog’s skin, muscles, and blood. It is best to choose dog treats and foods that have a whole protein (not a protein meal or byproduct) as the first ingredient. Protein meals and protein byproducts are processed and cooked multiple times, resulting in degradation and loss of nutrients. Protein meals and byproducts are known to cause skin sensitivities and other negative reactions in pets. (Read more about allergies and skin sensitivities in our article about lamb treats for dogs.)

B vitamins are good for many systems in the body, including the immune system, nervous system, and muscular system. B vitamins are also important for healthy brain function.

Iron is a mineral that is essential for energy production and growth. Iron also supports healthy blood.

Omega fatty acids support healthy brain function and help prevent disease.

Selenium fights inflammation and supports immunity.

Chicken vs. Duck

Chicken and duck are both categorized as poultry, so what is the difference between the two? Duck meat is often thought of as a higher fat meat than chicken, but that is actually a misconception (and not the only one). In fact, the opposite is true. Duck is lower in fat than chicken.

Another misconception about duck is that all of the meat is dark meat. Like chicken, the thighs and legs are darker, but the breast meat is lighter and milder.

Chicken is one of the most widely used and familiar proteins in the U.S. food supply for humans and for our pets. And choosing something we are familiar with that is widely accepted as safe, nutritional, and tasty seems very logical. While there is nothing wrong with choosing pet treats and pet foods with chicken as the primary protein, pet parents should be cautious and pay close attention to ingredient lists for the products they buy.

As we mentioned above, avoid products that use chicken meal or chicken byproduct. Choose products that use whole chicken or duck as the first ingredient and choose products that have fewer ingredients (long ingredient lists are often created to mask the lower protein content of a product that contains more grains and fillers).

Duck is a fantastic food choice for your pet and can be a great alternative if your furry friend experiences gastrointestinal issues or skin irritation from chicken, beef, or other popular proteins.

You can take comfort in knowing that our duck treats for dogs are air-dried, have limited ingredients, no artificial flavors, and taste delicious.

Best Duck Treats for Dogs – Our Pick

Mini Thinkers Duck Meat Sticks Dog Treats

Our Mini Thinkers Duck Meat Sticks are one of our most popular products. Dogs go nuts for these tasty treats and pet parents love sharing that moment of bliss when they toss one of these scrumptious sticks to their faithful companion.

Mini Thinkers Duck are made with real duck as the 1st ingredient. They are naturally preserved and contain no artificial flavors, corn, wheat, or soy.  Mini Thinkers offer chewing satisfaction in smaller portions and are size-appropriate for smaller dogs. And we take the extra time to air-dry them in batches in our USA facility instead of baking them in order to retain more of the ingredients’ inherent nutrients (but your dog will just think that they smell and taste amazing).
